·
The
National Institute of Health released a report in July 2001 that there is
no clinical evidence that condoms protect
against six of the eight major sexually transmitted diseases, the only
exceptions being some protection from HIV and gonorrhea.
·
The same
report stated that there is no clinical proof of condom effectiveness
against human papilloma virus (HPV), the most common STD today. It it known
to cause over 90% of all cervical cancer and kills 5,000 American women each
year - more than the number of women who die from AIDS.
·
You can
have an STD and have no symptoms for weeks,
months, possibly years. For instance, chlamydia infects up to 40% of
sexually active women, and frequently has no
symptoms. This disease is a major cause of Pelvic Inflammatory
Disease, which can cause scarring of the Fallopian tubes, and
consequent infertility.
·
One out of
four sexually-active teens contracts an STD each year.
· Today there are more than 30 STDs. Over half are viral and cannot be cured - they are lifelong.
It's your life! Get the facts.
Abstinence from sexual intercourse is the only certain way to avoid being infected with an STD. If you've already had sex, get checked out by having a comprehensive STD screening.
